One of the greatest cars ever made
Has to be the 300 SL Gullwing.
Great Video here
I saw this on autoblog, and it got me to thinking that it has to be one of, if not the greates automotive designs ever made. For every person who says that the E-type is the quintessential sports car design, I always point to the Gullwing as a more complete design, and I personally find it to be much better looking. It is not as phallic as the E-type, which is a good thing, as well as having better lines.
I tend to find cars that have similar design language to be the most beautiful of cars.
Some other favs, although I still think the Gullwing tops them all:
A6G 2000 Zagato Convertible:
DB4 Zagato:
Even with these three examples, I can never understand how the E-type tops so many lists. To my eyes it is nowhere near as attractive.

E-type is way better than the gullwing. Especially in Cab form.
I'd also suggest the following:
993 Turbo
'67 427 Vette
You knew it was coming

All kinds of great car pr0n in this thread.
Re: One of the greatest cars ever made
Insterad of the Miata, I would suggest the car that they took so many cues from
The F40 is a great looking car, I was just never a fan of all the straight edges. Same reason I don't like the 458 or other current Ferraris.
This is better than the F40
I do not like convertibles. I find the lack of the roof destroys the lines.
Exceptions:
A corvette needs to have a roof, and it should be done like this:
Love the 993, it deserves a place on any list.
The countach gets a big thumbs down from me, too angular to be truly attractive. Too many garish cues. If you want a really good design for an angular car, this is it:
Also, if you are looking for derivative designs, lets go with an FD3S

I'm with you on the '67 Sting Ray, Wally. Those have always been my favorites, coupe or roadster.
But I have to say I prefer the 930 over just about any other Porsche Turbos. maybe.
and the Lotus Elan is great, I'd totally love one if I had the time and money; but one thing the Miata has over the Elan is reliability, notably the propensity to not catch fire at a stoplight.

Is the Elan the one with rubber joints for the rear axle shafts? I think I saw that on Wheeler Dealers. What a stupid fucking design.

This is moving up my list and fast. Like maybe number two. It's just a fantastic, fantastic machine... especially when it comes to acceleration. I don't know of any production car short of the Veyron that will touch it.

The Adventador has made me like Supercars again. I have not since probably the Koenigsegg CCX.

I'm going to throw a GT car into the mix. Mid 90's DB7. I still love the way this car looks to this day.

The Reventon is just amazing in its badassery, but if you had the coin for it and missed out, the Aventador is a nice consolation prize. Such a sexy beast.
Re: One of the greatest cars ever made
I like the late 90's versions with the V12 better. And not just for the engine; the design changes (though minor as they are) just make it look more substantial:SBF wrote:I'm going to throw a GT car into the mix. Mid 90's DB7. I still love the way this car looks to this day.

By today's standards yes those wheels are ugly. But back then they didn't look too bad.
I still like them honestly.

Re: One of the greatest cars ever made
It must be an enduring sign of my poor taste that most of the cars mentioned aren't all that awesome to my eyes.
Some of my all time favourites (likely to be changed by Thursday):
Alfa Romeo 2900 MM
1961 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta SWB
Ford Mustang
Lexus LFA
