Midlife Crisis Thread #2
So, my life is extremely boring. Like Work-Eat-Sleep-Shit-Repeat boring. The most fun thing I do is go over to LX-Rs house and drink beer or go to a movie. I want to own something fun, like a car I can just jump into and drive. I don't really want something old that I have to spend $$$ on to get fixed up to make it run good or have to buy a bunch of shit to make a car fun. But I do want something that looks old, but can be brand new and cool. So in comes the JPS Motorsports 356A Coupe. It's a big chunk of change, but it is a brand new car that looks like an old Porsche. Also, it's a replicar, so I don't have to worry about expensive insurance or it never leaving the garage because I have to worry about it getting scratched (not that I would want it to).
This is the list of what it comes with.
While $25k is a lot of money for a kit car, they have a tedious process of building the car and it's basically them building a new car, including the engine. It does come with a warranty too. They also have a list of options, but I don't think I would need any of them.
While most people would think it would be stupid to waste money on such a thing, I think it would actually be pretty cool.
They have Speedsters too, but I'm a sucker for Coupes.

I remember looking at a 550 along these lines a while back. I still think it'd be an awesome idea. Owning the real thing would be cool - but such a headache. You'd never drive it much, constant fear of things breaking, going wrong, some asshole damaging it.... you couldn't really enjoy it. A kit car solves those problems nicely.
I say do it.

On some other forums, they were all boo-hooing that even though it looks like a Porsche, it's still just a VW and you'd be better off finding a 356B or C for around the same price or a 911 SC. No thanks, I don't want to pay out the ass for a 40 y.o. car then have to buy expensive parts. If its all VW parts, then I know it will be cheap to repair if necessary.
I don't think it would be the same as driving a VW. Plus all early Porsches were pretty much VW Beetles anyways. I think that it would be a blast to own and fun to drive.
I heard that they lose value fast, but fuck it, I would own it for many years and drive the piss out of it.

I'm more of a sucker for 356B's and C's. A's are nice, but I like the other two generations better.

Yeah. To hell with resale value. Buy it to love it. And yeah. the fact that it's a VW is a plus in my opinion. Good cars in any case, and here you get it wrapped in a sweet package.
Porsche purists (or purists of any vein) suck.
Fuck em.
Get the awesome car, and then let me drive it.

If you have the coin, I'd say go for it if its what you want. I'm having a similar mid life crisis but my dollars are mostly spend on kids and stuff.
Although I've been rethinking my current car situation.... more on that later.

I unfortunately don't have the coin, but one day will.
Right now my midlife crisis involves lusting after affordable cars.

Re: Midlife Crisis Thread #2
I found a Forester XT, black, manual, for $5500 today. Ohhhhh if only my tax refund was here and I could blow it all on a car....
Re: Midlife Crisis Thread #2
I want an actual car, sick of driving boxes around when i don't need to.
Depending on my situation in the next few weeks i may look at some used or new cars. Sonic, 500 Abarth, Astra, etc

I need to get a new car by the end of the year. I don't think the Dodge is long for this world.
That 500 Abarth looks nice. I'd also like to check out the Dart when it comes out, the Elantra coupe, and the Veloster turbo.

Re: Midlife Crisis Thread #2
Sat in an Abarth at the auto show. Nice seats. Not much room in the back. DLC connector is hanging out in the open above the hood release just ASKING to be kicked or have shit spilled on it.
Shifter was also very ropy. Needs to be stiffened up.

What about a Mazda 2?
The Veloster is a pretty cool looking car, really.

Yeah, there will be a big freakout when Bethesda rolls out Mustang Armor.

I much prefer the Fiesta to the 2. The Fiesta's on my short list also, as well as the Focus.
Re: Midlife Crisis Thread #2
Fiesta is more expensive, slower, less fun to drive, but easier to find.
I'm biased and want a 2. Kids fit in the back of that.

Re: Midlife Crisis Thread #2
Their difference in acceleration is only a few tenths of a second, and not anything that's all that perceptible, especially since neither of them are fast cars. The 2 is also IMHO somewhat ugly.

Yeah. Mine's a manual. Not a fast car by any measure. But fun. Driving half-way conservatively I beat EPA mileage estimates handily in town and on the highway. It's been a good purchase. Just wish it had more than 2 seats.
I swear. Never once needed a back seat in 3 years of Civic ownership - as soon as I switch to that car, I find myself wishing I had them once or twice a month.

I think the 5-door Fiesta is good looking, the 4-door looks like a high-assed Echo, blech. Only thing I don't like about the 2 is the headlights, but they make sleek projector units in Japan.... hmm....

Yeah, the 4-door Fiesta is ungainly in the back. I'd get the hatchback if I was to get one.

Mazda actually makes a 2 sedan for sale everywhere else in the world but here:
looks pretty good; like a miniature 3.

Re: Midlife Crisis Thread #2
Mazda 2 sedans seem ridiculously stubby, although it's mainly just the modern car high roof trend that makes it seem so short. It's probably the same length as a 1990 Lexus LS400.

Re: Midlife Crisis Thread #2
It's not so much the high roofline, but more the high beltline. Nowadays the overall proportions on some of these small cars make the rear wheels look so tiny. The Accent sedan has this problem too. Nice looking car, but the rear wheels look like they came off a Tonka toy.
Re: Midlife Crisis Thread #2
I am looking at getting a used Ford Ranger or Toyota pickup or something small with an auto and 4 cylinder. Just want to spend about $2000 or so on it. It's nice to have a second car as a beater for those days you dont feel like driving stick or if youre going in the city or somewhere you don't really want to take your nice car. Plus it's convenient having a pickup truck when you need to move something.

Re: Midlife Crisis Thread #2
Just FYI, just because it's a 4 banger doesn't mean it's gonna get great mileage and an automatic 4 cylinder mini truck is going to be slooooooow.
A place worked at a place that had two 2.3L Rangers. Both short bed/standard cab. One auto, one manual. I hated the automatic, it was the slowest fucking thing I think I've ever driven. The manual truck was geared right and you could wind out that 2.3 or hypermile the last drop out of it with the 5-speed.
My uncle has a couple year old automatic Tacoma with a 4-cylinder. It's slow as molasses too.

Re: Midlife Crisis Thread #2
It's ok if it's slow, just going to drive it back and forth to work like a granny anyway. The reason I want an automatic is that I don't want to have to get a feel for another clutch. Kinda had a hard time getting totally smooth with my wrx and don't want to mess up my muscle memory.
My one friend has a 2000 or so 4cyl auto ranger. My 318 was slightly quicker than it, but my '93 non-vtec civic was slightly slower. So yeah, pretty damn slow but as long as it's not old VW bug slow I can live with it.

My crisis car will be a Miata. I have thought about getting a beater 4 banger pickup like honor was talking about. It'd be good for hauling house-related bullshit.
