Looks like I'll be buying a PS4

Sony announced at E3 today that the PS4 will not require an online connection to use, and you can trade, rent, and loan games just like you can today. And at $399, it will be $100 less than the Xbone (though it will require Playstation Plus for online multiplayer).

All that Microsoft has for me these days is the Forza Motorsport series, and while FM5 looks VERY pretty, I've not seen anything yet that shows it's a major step up from FM4 otherwise. In fact, the new Cloud Drivatar AI seems stupid. And I've been getting more and more interested in some of the Sony exclusives over the last couple of years.

Unless Microsoft does a major about-face with their DRM and licensing policies, Kaz Hirai's got my money this time around.

This could make me convert back to Playstation, but I need to find an xbox controller that works with the Playstation. :lol:

They have adapters for the 360/PS3, probably wont take them too long after release to come up with ones for the next gens.

But now that they can properly model open wheel suspension (the thing that was holding them back prior), it opens the door for Caterhams, Ariel Atoms, etc.

Yep, every 24 hours it checks with XBox Live to see if your licenses are in order. If it's been offline more than 24 hours, you can't play games, even if they're offline single player games. Used games and borrowed games will be heavily restricted, rentals won't be allowed at launch, and the Kinect will spy on you to gather information about your gaming and movie watching habits.

And doubtful about Forza 6 being on the PS4; it's a Microsoft Studios game.

It may have been that whole "Stick with the 360" comment that did it. A lot of people had the idea of "No, I'll stick with a PS4, thanks."

It might also have had something to do with Sony inadvertently nuking some peoples' PS3's with last night's corrupdate.

Anyway, it's a good thing too, because even if i still had home internet, I just don't play games every day, or leave my machines on and connected 24/7; and it's bullshit that I would be penalized for that.

You're not supposed to leave your computers and game systems on constantly anyway. It's been my experience that that screws them up.

It's still $100 more expensive, uses less powerful hardware (scuttlebutt on the web is that developers are saying there's a noticeable performance difference between PS4 and Xbone games), and will spy on you. I'm still leaning toward the PS4. If Forza 5 turns out to be orgasmically awesome, then maybe I'll go Xbone, but I'm still wary whether or not MS will try to pull that shit again later.

Oh, and "your feedback matters." People were saying they didn't want the DRM and the always-on thing for months when rumors hit that it might be present. Feedback only mattered when they saw their pre-order numbers and all the negative press, apparently.

I'll end up getting a PS4 first as well, of course. maybe I'll pick up the Xbone after the prices drop substantially (I.e. used) and I find myself replaying PS4 games--not that I mind that, but sometimes, you need new stuff to do.

It was discovered several months back that Microsoft had filed patents for camera technology that would allow them to target advertising to console users based on what they were doing or saying while playing games and watching movies, and to limit movie licenses if there were too many people in a room watching. Then when the Xbone was revealed to come with Kinect standard and that it was always on and listening for commands, dots were connected to suggest that this might be implemented, especially when the online requirement was confirmed and the news that the Kinect could do as much as read your facial expressions and even your heart rate. Microsoft hasn't done a good job of quelling those fears, saying that you'll be able to set up privacy controls and that "data will not leave your XBox without your explicit permission," but has not denied that it's collecting data about you.
