Jaguar...
Dammit!
It's pronounced Jag-u-ar , not Jagwar.
Christ even car/motor sport enthusiasts and auto writers can't seem to get the god damn name correct.
Just venting a little bit

In the US, we pronounce it Jag-War and we say Alu-mi-num not Al-u-mini-um.

It's Jag u ar as the way the English company would pronounce it's own name. It's the pronunciation of a proper name.

I wouldn't worry considering Lyons couldn't spell his surname properly.

Actually I have to agree with Les (scary, I know).
My dad always taught me that a Jag-yoo-er is a car and a Jag-war is a cat.
According to Am. English grammar, we would also have to pronounce Porsche as "Porsh", but every self respecting car guy on the face of this planet knows it's really "Por-sha"; "Porsh" is incorrect.

Australians pronounce it the English way but I can't help but feel we (and the English) are wrong. Although I suppose so are Americans - shouldn't it be Yag-war?

Re: Jaguar...
I'd shoot myself in the head before I ever uttered a word that was sounded out as "por-sha". I'd sooner get around in public calling a certain department store "Tar-jay"Turbojett wrote:Actually I have to agree with Les (scary, I know).

But then I have no self-respect, and would hardly call myself a "car guy", these days especially.
So what would you say if someone was to ask you what the animal in this logo was called.

Seriously? The company is named after the cat. And while the Brits say Jag-u-are, most Americans say Jag-wuar. One of my dads friends is an old Jaguar mechanic and he says Jag-wuar.
Also as for Porsche, I say Porsh-ah. I let all the ingrates say Porsh.
Do you call Renault "Re-Know" or "Re-Nalt"?

Haha, Renalt, Pergot and and Kitron. It's funny how you can get away with mispronouncing other countries' manufacturers, yet you are made to be a fool if you do it with a French brand. Too many sophisitcated snobs waiting to correct you. Such as Dunnas, with his Re-nalt Cl-I-o.
I say Porsh-eh because I learned German for so long and that's what I'm used to. It definitely isn't the strong PorschA that some people insist on saying, but I don't think it matters. Austrian German gets pretty weird sometimes.

You sorta have a point. That said most English speaking people haven't a clue that correct Germanic pronunciation is Folksvagen. But in English its Volkswagen. So since the correct way in English to pronounce Jaguar or jaguar (as in the cat itself) is still Jag U ar. Not Jagwar.

Merriam-Webster online says it can be pronounced either way. Jag-u-ar is a part of the British Dialect. It's pointless to argue about this. It can be said either way, there is no wrong way of pronouncing it.
jag·uar
noun
\ˈja-ˌgwär, -gyə-ˌwär, -gwər; dialect -gwī(-ə)r, especially British ˈja-gyə-wər\

but this one doesn't. I'm a nerd about that. A jag-war is a cat.
I say:
r'-NO
PU-jo
SIT-trune (though I'm never really sure I'm pronouncing that one right)
POR-sha
JAG-u-er
boo-GA-tee
And "Jag-Wire" sends me up a damn tree. God, that annoys me so much.
On a side note, i used to work/hang out with a guy that was a total grammar Nazi, who bought a Cobalt SS about the same time I bought my Slow-balt. he had a windshield header sticker that said Chevrolet, but he cut the "T" off because: "We speak English. This is how it should be spelled, because this is how it's pronounced!"
"No. because now it spells 'Chev-roll'"

I need to find the "Reasonably priced car" segment where Patrick Stewart accidentally said "Jag-war" and Clarkson nearly shot heat vision at him.
I think this is it....but Clarckson didn't shoot him half as dirty a look as I remember.

I'm gonna let this one slide TJ, but the company is named after the cat, therefore it should have the same sounding name.

wat n ideeit.
I've had my eye on an '06 SS Coupe for sale nearby, but they're selling it for a couple grand more than I think it's worth. Used car prices are nuts these days.

That's some bullshit. Someone's selling a '96 near here with 50k for $9,995.
Re: Jaguar...
Its pronounced Jag-you-ar...we just accept Americans have their own way of pronouncing things.
And FWIW, i've met members of the Porsche family, and as they pronounced their own name much closer to Porsh than anything else, i'm going to side with them on that one. Noone says Porsh-ah in Europe.

The dealership guys that sold me my Porsche called it a 'Porsh", but the service department says "porsha service" when they pick up the phone. It could go either way.
Personally I feel that even if "porsha" was the correct pronunciation (TV ads seem to say "porsha"), it comes off as douchy when people say it like that.

Do you pronounce Hyundai as "Hi-oon-die?" The Korean pronunciation is more like "Hyoon-deh." Even Americans are much closer than that.
