I heard they looked not too bad this year, so far.
In any case I need to root for a huge underdog in Football to compensate for my love of the Lakers in Basketball.
The Giants are doing well in MLB this year too which is nice, so I've officially switched over from the Dodgers.

What's the difference between the Giants and the Jets. Is one NY state and the other the city?
And does anyone support the New York Islanders in ice hockey?

The Giants and the Jets actually share the same stadium, though they didn't before 1984.
The Giants are in the National Conference, and the Jets are in the American Conference. The Giants were the old NFL team, and the Jets were part of the upstart American Football League in the 1960's. Then the NFL and AFL merged together, so they ended up with two New York teams.

sometimes in sports, big cities get two teams.Swerve wrote:What's the difference between the Giants and the Jets. Is one NY state and the other the city?

in baseball you've got the Cubs/White Sox in Chicago, or Yankees/Mets in NYC
in basketball you've got Lakers/Clippers in LA (even though the Clippers are little more than a punch line)
a little crosstown rivalry never hurt.

Hey, the Clippers have sortof, kindof started to come into their own this year. Not doing horrible. Blake Griffin is a pretty phenomenal player, and, apparently, a serious rookie of the year contender. Obviously they aren't the Lakers, but I'm not sure they could be considered a punch line anymore.

I was torn with the Green Bay/Philly game. I hate the Packers, but yet I don't like the Eagles and I hate Michael Vick with a passion (that fucker should have never been let back in the NFL and anyone who thinks otherwise either doesn't have pets or needs to think about their favorite dog or cat being used for bait for a dog fighting ring).

Vick did something beyond repugnant, to be sure. But he was caught, arrested, convicted, sentenced, and served his sentence. If he's cleaned his life up, and is making a sincere effort to stay on the straight and narrow which he seems to be, then I don't see why he shouldn't have a second chance.
I still wouldn't let him anywhere near a dog, though.

I saw that crap about him saying he's "ready to own a dog again," like its his choice. The judge didn't say, you can't own a dog until you've gone to your room an thought about what you've done; he said simply you can't own a dog. Ever. Period. End of story.
And he's all pleading and trying to make a public case about, "Oh, what am I supposed to tell my daughter about why she's not allowed to have a dog?"
Well, you can tell her that her father's an idiot who basically killed dogs for a living. Or how you ruined it for her by training dogs to rip each others' throats out for money. Or that you're to blame because you have no respect for animal life. That's a start.

I've heard this argument before and if it were drugs, steroids, or guns, I would agree. Maybe it's the animal advocate part of me, but if he would have had a child prostitution ring, child labor ring, or pushing elderly people down flights of stairs for fun, he would have spent more time in jail and never let back into professional sports. That stuff is just as bad as the dog fighting and is just as irreparable.
I know I sound like some crazypants asshole PETA motherfucker, but there needs to be advocates for someone or something that can't speakup and defend themselves. I'm just as big as a football fan as the next guy, but that's one of the dumbest things the NFL has done.

I don't think it's so much the NFL as the law that's too soft in that instant. Once someone has done his time he deserves a second chance. It's just a shame that laws around animal cruelty are so limp wristed everywhere...

Well my opinion is, that if you want to hit a professional athlete hard, you don't let them back into the sport they play. That's why I partially blame the NFL, plus it looks bad on their part. "HEY KIDS! EVEN CRIMINALS CAN PLAY PROFESSIONAL SPORTS!"

Meh, to be honest, the Bears didn't even deserve to go to the super bowl. They didn't even try for the first 3 quarters. I'm disappointed, but I will get over it.
Either way, I'm rooting for the Steelers.

Kickoff for the Super Bowl is slated for 6:30 pm EST, February 6th.
Re: It's official...Football 2010-11 thread
D'oh! I turned on the tv and opened this thread at the same time. So I had to start squinting to make sure if the Super Bowl had been played I didn't know the result. To make matters more confusing, the tv is playing "Road to the Super Bowl", so I had no idea if this was the pre-replay show...

It was a good game, close until the end. Neither team do I cheer for but congrats to the Cheese Heads.
Black Eyed Peas half time show was nothing special short of Fergie looking pretty hot but meh that type of music simply is bad to my ears.
Bring back Petty or Springsteen for a real rockin half time show.
