Football (Australian) Empty Football (Australian)

Post by Swerve Tue Mar 03, 2009 8:11 am

I'm thinking this forum should all jump on the AFL bandwagon this year. I'm struggling with how to make that happen though.

From experience, the only way to become interested in a new sport at a late age is through a gambling addiction. But since so many American leagues have fifteen games per team per week, there are too many distractions for you guys at home...

Ideas? MAybe start by supporting Collingwood, the most beloved of all sports teams.

But unlike Olds, it would be a mistake to ignore Collingwood.

Pre-season doesn't mean much on a team vs. team level. You can tell a lot about individual players though. Cloke is back to full fitness and is going to be be pretty unstoppable when Rocca's the one with the two defenders.
If Rusling's shoulder holds up this year, our forward line will rotate him, Didak, Medhurst, Davis and Thomas for the smalls and Fraser, Rocca, Cloke, Bryan and Anthony for the talls. Obviously Hawthorn is hard to top (until Buddy gets his third strike) but we're number 2.

We just need to win clearances.

Meh. St Kilda has won 3 pre season Grand Finals since, and including '96, and it's gotten us nowhere. :smelly: :jay:

I'd assumed the game would be tomorrow night. I thought it was always the Saturday. I'm going to see watchmen at IMAX so I won't see a minute of it. Damn long-ass movie, i'm even going to struggle to catch the last train out of the city if the movie itself doesn't start exactly at 9:00. I guess I should probably just drive in. Any idea of the parking situation at the Museum? Not that you'll likely see this before i'm gone?

Melbourne drew with Sydney last week, 11.18.84 each (amazingly). Last night, Richmond (one of the worst teams) drew with last year's Grand Final runners up, Dunnas' St Kilda.
Collingwood looking very good for back to back Premierships.

Oh yeah, without Lenny we have no chance. We certainly should (had better) pick up our game a bit at some stage though. At $2.50 still people should be mortgaging their homes to put it on Collingwood.

If Jolly gets injured it brings Collingwood back a bit, but it's hard to say where the challenge will come from. If Hawthorn start winning I suspect big dollars will hit them, so I doubt the Pies will shorten from $2.50. I wouldn't be putting money on any team just yet...

Hawthorn will just take money from the saints, geelong and the bulldogs. I think Collingwood will end up shortening pretty quickly after a few more impressive performances. They're peaking just as the main threats of the past few years are fading and the up and comers like Carlton and Essendon aren't there yet.

Remember what happened to Geelong in 2008. It only takes one bad game...the one difference from that year is that the Cats, Dogs and Hawks were all 8-0 at the start of the season. Only the Cats and Pies (and tehnically Blues and West Coast) can pull that off.

For the Americans, my team look like being the equivalent of the New England Patriots from a couple of years ago. Only difference is they already won last year, plus we're only two games into the season...plus they might actually not lose at the end.

meh. American football doesn't even really excite me anymore (oh horrors!) and I don't like the Patriots anyway (gasp!)
As far as I'm concerned it's become a big cliche (zounds!)

Aussie football is different, and I have to say seems somewhat intriguing, but I don't even know If I could even really try to get into something that different, half a world away (and upside-down).

Yeah, I'm about here with American Football. It's alright to watch. I'll join some friends over a couple pints and some nachos and watch a game, but it's not something I follow closely.

I'm a baseball / basketball fan. :talon2:

I was trying to find a montage of the injuries to have already been sustained two rounds in. But this was the first video to come up. It's not a bad ad for the sport because you don't have to know any of the rules (similar to the current referees)...

that sounds a lot like most of the officials in just about any American sport.
