Favorite Pontiac of Recent Years? Empty Favorite Pontiac of Recent Years?

Post by SBF Sun Mar 14, 2010 10:19 am

A buddy of mine had brought up the other day if there were any Pontiacs of recent that you actually liked. I asked how far back and he said the 80's. I actually had a few.

Now set aside the bullshit, I remember going to the auto shows as a kid and remembering some of the concepts and actual production models that looked good for the time, but I rounded it down to what I actually liked then and now.

I think the Solstice was actually a pretty sweet car. I'd have driven it.

The coupe was cool too.

It didn't become the car it should have been until production wrapped up, but the Fiero was a pretty neat car.

actually, i'd say a G8 is the best of recent, but that is like saying an astra is a saturn?

So i think you'd have to go back to the 80's or 90's for a "decent" pontiac, and go back to the 50's and 60's for a cool one

I like the look of the Solstice. The unused G8 fronts have been used for a special ugly-edition V8 Commodore, although funnily enough there is nowhere to attach the Holden badge. Which probably doesn't matter to owners, because all modern Commodores and especially the utes seem to end up with Chevrolet badges.

I saw an 80s Firebird yesterday. Here they're always autos and they're always for sale. The late-model Fiero is cooler.

It's sad that the 3.4L V6 from the 90's was capable of producing 275hp but they detuned it to 210 because the transmissions couldn't handle the torque output. They could have made that engine a lot better and produced it for more than the Cutlass/Grand Prix/Lumina group.

The quad cam 3.4L was a horribly designed shitty leaky engine anyways. It has a timing belt AND A FUCKING TIMING CHAIN.

Any work you need to do on the motor damn near required pulling it out of the car.

FUCK that motor.

It was better as a RWD engine. I knew people that had them and never had issues, and I knew people that had them and they were nightmares. GM could have made a much better engine out of it, but they stuck with the 3.8L and in the last few years they have just come back out with a DOHC V6.

My '90 Maxima had to have the engine pulled to do any major work on it. Even to replace the timing belt.

Its really not uncommon for V6 fwd cars to require a pull to do major work, and most of the time its easier, even for rwd cars
