It went to hell. They escaped with the captain in life boats, but the crew still had a prisoner. So they set up a trade with the pirates, the captain for the prisoner. Well the pirates got there guy back but still kept the captain.

SEALs took those fuckers out
The nighttime operation was a victory for the world's most powerful military, but few experts believed it would quell a rising tide of attacks in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
Interviewed from Bahrain, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command chief Vice Adm. Bill Gortney said the takedown happened shortly after the hostage-takers were observed by sailors aboard the USS Bainbridge "with their heads and shoulders exposed."
U.S. Defense officials said snipers got the go-ahead to fire after one pirate held an AK-47 so close to Capt. Richard Phillips' back that the weapon appeared to be touching him. Two other pirates popped their heads up, giving snipers three clear targets, one official said.
The military officials asked not to be named because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the case.
The Navy released images of the scene from an unmanned drone that showed snipers positioning themselves on the fantail of the USS Bainbridge. The snipers fired simultaneously.
Asked how the snipers could have killed each pirate with a single shot in the dark, Gortney described them as "extremely, extremely well-trained." He told NBC's "Today" show that the shooting was ordered by the captain of the Bainbridge.
The SEALS arrived on the scene by parachuting from their aircraft into the sea, and were picked up by the Bainbridge, a senior U.S. official said.
He said negotiations with the pirates had been "going up and down." The official, asking not to be publicly identified because he, too, was not authorized to discuss this on the record, said the pirates were "becoming increasingly agitated in the rough waters; they weren't getting what they wanted."
Just as it was getting dark, pirates fired a tracer bullet "toward the Bainbridge," further heightening the sense that the incident was ratcheting up, the official said.
He said when the time snipers fired, Phillips' hands were bound. Phillips was not hurt in several minutes of gunfire Sunday.

I am so glad they shot those scumbags.
Obama was presented with the papers to use force to get the captain back... he signed off both times. Fuckin' A.

Yeah man. They really need to train and arm a small portion of the men on these ships or just send some marines along for the ride. After the pirates realized that our boys were packing heat they'd be a lot less likely to go for american ships.

That and maybe a 20mm or two... don't even give them the chance to get close enough.

They take captives, hold them hostage at gunpoint, steal ships and cargo...fuck them, what did they expect? I don't care how well they were treating captives up to now, they're still kidnappers, thieves, and gangsters.
As well organized as they seemed to have become, considering this grew out of a movement to keep other countries from dumping toxic waste near their shores and stealing fish from their waters, they could have formed some sort of government in that lawless hellhole they hide out in, joined the world community, and done some good. But instead decided to go too far and start stealing shit from people that had no beef with them.
If they want to start fucking with the US Navy, they'd better look at raiding a cargo ship that's hauling caskets.
Re: Pirates strike again, but this time get pwned
I don't understand why America would be the number 1 enemy, apart from the publicity. At least the US gives the captors a chance to surrender. France and Russia are much more dangerous opponents, because you sign your death warrant as soon as you board their ships. The only problem from a humanitarian point of view is French and Russian commandos tend to take out half the hostages during the "rescue".

i dont see why an aircraft carrier isnt sent there? the main problem at the moment is warships cant get to the ships fast enough, so just sent a fighter out to strafe them should soon fix the problem

That makes sense.
Just like when the SEALS parachuted to the ship, you can jump from the plane, mission impossible style and kick some pirate ass and save the day. Those lethal kickboxing skills are silent, unlike firearms. Knife attacks don't cut through mattel grade plastic as well. If things get bad, Ken can backup

maybe all ships going to that area should have destroyer escorts. Or guided missile frigates at least.

You wouldn't even need a guided missile frigate. A simple coast guard cutter would have no problem dispatching these pirates.

But they really are, I mean these pirate have what? Motor boats, small arms and maybe and RPG or two? A fast, well armed cutter could easily provide enough disincentive to keep them from attacking a freighter I'm sure.

Rush Limbaugh was talking about how terrible it was that Obama murdered those teenaged kids that were just scared and wanting to leave and wanted to give the captain back but were all murdered by Obama before they had the chance, and complaining about how if it were a Republican president who did it, there'd be all kinds of outrage.
One of the exact quotes, "Now, just imagine the hue and cry had a Republican president ordered the shooting of black teenagers on the high seas."
I like Rush's Freudian implication that the Republican president would automatically be white.
