McCain's Crowd on Obama
"He's a terrorist"
"Kill him!"
Good lord. I almost don't want Obama to win because I'm afraid for his safety. This is like serious "Lord of the Flies" shit. Humanity sucks. Humanity really, really sucks.

Also, the link.

McCain's response to those kinds of comments tells you everything you need to know about that man's "character".

Re: McCain's Crowd on Obama
Of course, we should all keep in mind that, according to Cindy McCain, Obama's waging the dirtiest campaign in American history.

By "dirtiest campaign in American history", does she mean "most uppity campaign in American history"?

I masturbate to a generous mix of ethnicities in my pornography, so I know I'm not racist.

Yeah, that's definitely disgusting, and the racist, destroy-the-others vibe among the right is especially repugnant. But I'm not all that surprised. True believers say and do stupid things, and that tendency is amplified when they gather in large groups. I'm not sure that these data points are at all useful when trying to figure out what is going on in the mind of McCain supporters.

It never ceases to amaze me. Walden pond looks more attractive every day.

Indeed. I've been reading Emerson's "Self-Reliance" in small chunks (it's deep stuff, and I've found that it's better to read a bit of that sort of thing, and then think about it before going back to the text for a bit more) and the trancendentalist's worldview has a pretty strong appeal right now. I also just finished David Guterson's The Other, a novel involving a hermit*, and I must admit that I felt quite a bit of affinity for his character.
*If the title didn't make it clear, the book is, in part, an allegory about two ways of reacting to the world we live in: weary acceptance, and self-destructive rebellion. I'm doing the first, but feeling more and more inclined to the latter.

PS-I'm afraid that if you went to Walden, you might find it within rock-throwing distance of a freeway or strip mall.
Our liberation, if it comes, is more likely be based on technology, networking, and self-definition within the space created by technology than from some atavistic retreat to a cave. OTOH, perhaps I've been reading too much sci-fi stuff.

I'm certainly closer to the former than the latter... Although I do find myself doing thigns that might be considered 'self destructive rebellion' from time to time. Quitting a (soon to be) high paying law job before I'd found alternative employment. Of course I'm still in an office, and I'm still playing by societies greater rulebook. So, yeah. I'm definitely leaning towards weary acceptance, and I'm sure I will for the duration of my time here.

I find that kind of depressing. Freedom through technology, and networking, self definition within technology still seems to be artifically limited. I appreciate it. I think the internet is a massive blow in favor of individuality and liberty... at the same time I want to get back to nature. I don't want to lose that connection to the greater natural world.
