Epic cat vs. dead rat fight
I found this on holytaco.com, and the pictures are just hilarious for some reason. They'll make good lolcats.

That sucks. That looks like a dead rat. Hopefully it's a feeder and not someone's pet.

Hamsters aren't nearly as personable. Unfortunately, rats don't live that long either; two to three years is average with four being crazy old. But they're so sweet and lovable.

Re: Epic cat vs. dead rat fight
The only problem with rats is that most people find them to be quite nasty. I'd consider getting one but I don't want people thinking I'm a weirdo.

Eh, we get that a lot but once people actually see him, they're not that freaked out because pet rats are nothing like city rats. Our roommate's girlfriend thought they were SO disgusting but she's actually gotten to the point of petting Bartleby. They're so cute and funny and dopey, you can't help but to like them.

Ferrets are cool too but a lot of people that own them seem a little too into them.

Whenever I go to the pet store, the ferret litter box is piled high with shit and it smells worse than human shit. And then they just step into it, then all over each other and it's disgusting. They also smell, even with their scent glands removed.

It sounds like your pet store is the problem, not ferrets. I agree that they do still have a smell but if you keep them clean it isn't really a problem. I've never been to a pet store or someone's house who had them where "shit was piled high."

It may be but I'd rather deal with rat pellets than ferret shit.
My uncle had two ferrets and they were fun to play with for a few minutes but I'm just not a ferret person.
Plus, the little bitches like to steal shiny stuff.

Yeah, I read up on them quite a bit recently and I don't think they're really the pet for me either. You basically have to "ferret proof" your house like if you had a 2 year old kid. Apparently they will get into almost anything and if you don't watch them they can even dig holes in your carpet. Fuck that.

Yeah, my uncle's ferrets started created nests in the back of his upholstered chairs.

Haha, I'd rather prevent that if possible. I wouldn't mind having a cat but I'm allergic so that probably isn't the best idea. Ideally I want to get a dog at some point but I'd like to be making more money before I do that.

Re: Epic cat vs. dead rat fight
Get a couple of rats. You can easily train them to use one of those rodent litterboxes and they're pretty self-sufficient. Just take them out to play and make sure they're eating a proper diet. (You can easily make a blend that's cheap and will last forever.)
The only thing is, they're prone to respiratory infections so you'll need to have an exotic vet handy. (Exotic vets just specialize in animals that aren't cats or dogs.)

Re: Epic cat vs. dead rat fight
If I did have a rat and one had some sort of problem that was going to cost me several hundred dollars I'm not sure I could justify paying for it when they only live a couple years anyway. How much does it usually run you to take them to the vet?

Well, our last rat Riddle developed an infection; it also led to lice because he wasn't grooming himself as often. (It's a rat-only variety thankfully.) They offered us two options: the at-home method for $150 which included two prescriptions of liquid medicine and a small sample of some flea killer or surgery for $800. You can guess what we opted for. The only problem was, it turned out to not be an infection so, while the medicines helped clear OTHER stuff up, they didn't fix his breathing and we had to put him down. If he were an animal that lived, say, five or six years, we would've opted for the surgery but, like you, it's hard to justify, especially since he was already almost two years old.
Honestly, it depends on your vet. Some people get out for $80, some $300.
For a general checkup, I want to say it's $20 or $25 but it depends on what they do. I actually need to call them and schedule an appointment to get his nails cut. The Banfield at PetsMart will do it for $11 but I want to see what our vet will charge since I kind of trust them more. Amazing how our tiny little cottonball hamster would let us cut her nails but the rat freaks out.
All in all, though, they're very low-key animals. Just make sure you get a fairly spacious cage --- ferret cages are preferred --- and feed them a good diet. Clean their cage regularly and that's really about it. The males are easier to deal with since they're far lazier than the females.
