Japan Earthquake
8.4! What the hell is going on with the world at the moment? It is having one hell of a bad run.

Re: Japan Earthquake
Jeez, I didn't even see this before I posted. Anyway, we're hearing it was an 8.9.
And we're getting tsunami warnings here, half a world away. They're telling people living near the shore to prepare for evacuation if necessary.
Sheer madness right now.

The footage of the devastation in Japan is just absolutely surreal. I feel horrible for everyone over there.
Re: Japan Earthquake
I have two friends stationed in misawa japan i'm still waiting to hear from, cant get them by phone or internets :\
Re: Japan Earthquake
I hope they're okay. The base appears to have weathered everything well, though. http://www.misawa.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123246447
Re: Japan Earthquake
yeah, im sure they are fine but its still a little spooky to not be able to get ahold of someone during something like this
Re: Japan Earthquake
The potential nuclear disaster looming isn't a very happy thought, either...

Re: Japan Earthquake
we heard from them today they are fine from the quake but apparently everyone is real on edge about the plant
but they are on base now so i'm sure they are in about the safest place around if something goes south

These exploding plants just set back the very sensible concept of Australia using nuclear power by about 30 years...

Yep, when we allow fear baiting blowhards who claim to be experts spout anti-nuclear crap about nuclear power, we then see it seep into the minds of generally clueless lay persons who then think of the worst with nuke power.
The problem also is that most general folks understand electricity as the stuff that magically comes out from a wall outlet or via a light switch. That's all they know and care in that regard. They are then baited by the ramblings of asshole anti-nuclear power blowhards. They fail to think that on avg. 10,000 people die each year in the extraction of and processing of coal, let alone the vastly more awful health issues with using coal for electricity generation.
In each of our lungs contains micro bits of radioactive thorium from the burning of millions of tonnes of coal each year.
But nooooooo we must fear the 50+ years of very safe and clean use of nuclear power.
If the world shut down all nuclear power plants, where shall we get the vast amounts of electricity from to replace this amount? You see the idiot clamour will never be able to give us a viable, useful, affordable and more safe/cleaner alternative. They just fear monger and to make a name and or buck for themselves and idiot cause.
Les_Vipers_rule- The only thing that excites me anymore is ennui.

Re: Japan Earthquake
Over on the somethingawful forums, some goon made a post asking for everyone to help him do his homework, which is annoying and frowned upon and is a bannable offense. One of the mods put forth some awesome challenges for him to keep his account, and stipulated if anyone else did any of those challenges first, they'd let him decide his fate (it should be noted that banned users can buy a new account).
Well, the OP didn't follow through, and someone did one of the challenges, and said if the OP would the cost of his account to charity, he should be spared. This spiraled into the rest of the goons saying, "I'll donate X to the Red Cross's Japan Earthquake/Tsunami fund if you perma-ban that fucker" (perma-banned users cannot buy a new account). So far, they've donated $43,000.

Re: Japan Earthquake
there was just some talk about a new "baby tsunami" cause of an earthquake 6.5 on the scale... but they revoked the warning...
Re: Japan Earthquake
I saw that video too. It was all like: "Uh Oh, The river just got higher" then in 2 minutes: "Fuck my car was in that garage", then another two minutes: "Well, there goes the neighborhood".

Damn. In a little under six minutes, roads, cars, buildings were completely washed away. It looked like the water was almost up to the top of the building that guy was standing on. Scary just watching it.
