Sometimes laughing at shit deflects anger. And they may be treading lightly to avoid the Streisand effect as well.

To weigh in on the early retardedness, the BP exec obviously underestimated public sentiment. He's probably not a dumb guy but that was a pretty goddamn stupid thing to say. This is the sort of shit that usually drops out of private email inquiries, not fucking press conferences.
