90-mile drive turns into a 900-mile drive thanks to over-reliance on GPS Empty 90-mile drive turns into a 900-mile drive thanks to over-reliance on GPS

http://news.discovery.com/autos/drive/gps-error-directs-driver-900-miles-not-90-130114.htm

But apparently, 67-year-old Sabine Moreau, of Belgium left her home in Hainault Erquelinnes to pick up a friend at a train station in Brussels and ended up driving to Croatia. Along the way, she had plenty of clues that she was headed in the wrong direction. For instance, she started seeing road signs first in French and then in German. She also had to stop twice for gas and to pull over for a nap along the side of the road. She even had a minor fender bender.

She told El Mundo, “I was distracted, so I kept driving. I saw all kinds of traffic signs, first in French, then German and finally in Croatian, but I kept driving because I was distracted. Suddenly I appeared in Zagreb and I realized I wasn’t in Belgium anymore.”

Talk about distracted driving. It’s unclear if the GPS was wrong, or if the human programmed the GPS wrong.

How do you not notice an hour-and-a-half trip turning into a nearly two-day affair that requires two tanks of gas and a nap?

It's pretty clear from where i'm sitting.

I think that's enough to tell the story.

I bet sooner than later we will find similar type reliance on GPS only stories by other age groups too.

Technology has its place but in many ways and for many people it has subverted much of the critical thinking mind to only have said mind and thus person subservient to what the technology in use is doing.

How many people can still do basic math in their mind or on a piece of paper?

Is technology a blessing or a hindrance? I depends on how one uses any of it.

I still struggle with math, and always have; and this was long before computers were so prevalent. i remember having to stay after in second grade to finish math assignments, because my teacher WOULD NOT HELP ME UNDERSTAND THIS SHIT. "You have to get it on your own," she said, "That's the only way you'll learn it." and "everybody else understands this just fine, why are you struggling?"

sure, now I can do basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc in my head, but as far as the latter two are concerned, by no means quickly. and I'm still guilty of breaking out my fingers from time to time for larger problems.

I've never been able to do math in my head, only ever on paper.

I didn't mean to insinuate any derogatory stuff as per the math stuff I noted. I only meant that today it's to easy for society to delegate critical thinking to a computer device or machine etc. And as such people are often not being seen as very bright from such delegating. It makes us too lazy at times as well.

I hate the over reliance on calculators. Most people cant even estimate properly let alone do mental arithmetic. If you need to multiply 39 by 42 you shouldn't look blankly at someone.

see, that I'd have to think about for a few minutes. I've never gotten math; I always used to think it was because I'm too right-brained, but I think I just wasn't taught adequately enough by people who don't take their job--THE MOST IMPORTANT PROFESSION IN THE WORLD--seriously. God Bless the public school system.

Just divide it up:

4x4=16 therefore 40*40 is 1600
Then add a bit extra

i do it like :

39 x 10 is 390, 390 x 4 is 1560, 1560 + 39 x2 (78) is 1638.

maybe not the easiest way to multiply in your head but that's basically the way i've always done it.

Calculators have definitely poisoned me.

I would have definitely just pulled the "it's about 1600" and called it a day.

that's what I usually end up doing. but only after about a few minutes of doing it the hard way like i was taught:
9*2=18, carry one, 984=32, plus carried one is 33, first line is 338, next line, add zero in tens place, 3*2=6, 3*4=12, second line 1260, 338+1260=1598 etc.
because i was taught in third grade that that's the only way to do it. I know now that there's an easier way, but my mind stubbornly defaults to doing it more complicated than it needs to be, and it frustrates me. But to this day I still don't know how everybody got this whole rigmarole so much easier than I did.

90-mile drive turns into a 900-mile drive thanks to over-reliance on GPS Empty Re: 90-mile drive turns into a 900-mile drive thanks to over-reliance on GPS

Post by Swerve Sat Jan 19, 2013 6:04 am

4 X 30 = 120
4 X 9 = 36
120 + 36 = 156
so 40 X 39 = 1560
2 X 39 = 78
= 1560 + 78 = 1638

When done in your head the additions and therefores are automatic rather than calculations requiring thought, so you end up with three simple calculations:
4 X 30
4 X 9
2 X 39
= 1638

I doubt anyone teaches that method but it's definitely quickest for me and easiest to recall the results already calculated.
