Wow appraised at $200Million, bought for $45.00 at a garage sale.
Buyer " You got these old negs."
Seller " Yeah some junk I had kicking around for a while."
Buyer " Hmm I'll give ya $45 for em."
Seller " Hmmm, ok!"
Ten years later.
Original Seller " OH SHIT, DAMN, FUCK, $200MILLION... DAMMIT I LET THEM GO FOR $45 GOD DAMN BUCKS!"

Re: Ansel Adams glass plates bought at a garage sale
id bet $200 million they dont fetch anywhere near $200 million
seriously. only 6 pieces of art in history have fetched more than half that. a set of negatives by a semi famous photographer isnt going to be up there with da vinci, renoir et al.

Quotes from some semi-famous photographer. You know who's that guy? Ahh, what's his name? You know? Come on that guy who carried that big camera around like ahh 100 years ago? Dammit who is he? LOL Penz always good for interjecting silly humour here.
A good photograph is knowing where to stand.
Ansel Adams
A great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed.
Ansel Adams
A photograph is usually looked at - seldom looked into.
Ansel Adams
A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words.
Ansel Adams
Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships.
Ansel Adams
I tried to keep both arts alive, but the camera won. I found that while the camera does not express the soul, perhaps a photograph can!
Ansel Adams
In my mind's eye, I visualize how a particular... sight and feeling will appear on a print. If it excites me, there is a good chance it will make a good photograph. It is an intuitive sense, an ability that comes from a lot of practice.
Ansel Adams
In wisdom gathered over time I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.
Ansel Adams
It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment.
Ansel Adams
It is my intention to present - through the medium of photography - intuitive observations of the natural world which may have meaning to the spectators.
Ansel Adams
Landscape photography is the supreme test of the photographer - and often the supreme disappointment.
Ansel Adams
Millions of men have lived to fight, build palaces and boundaries, shape destinies and societies; but the compelling force of all times has been the force of originality and creation profoundly affecting the roots of human spirit.
Ansel Adams
Myths and creeds are heroic struggles to comprehend the truth in the world.
Ansel Adams
No man has the right to dictate what other men should perceive, create or produce, but all should be encouraged to reveal themselves, their perceptions and emotions, and to build confidence in the creative spirit.
Ansel Adams
Not everybody trusts paintings but people believe photographs.
Ansel Adams
Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art.
Ansel Adams
Photography, as a powerful medium of expression and communications, offers an infinite variety of perception, interpretation and execution.
Ansel Adams
Some photographers take reality... and impose the domination of their own thought and spirit. Others come before reality more tenderly and a photograph to them is an instrument of love and revelation.
Ansel Adams
Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter.
Ansel Adams
The negative is comparable to the composer's score and the print to its performance. Each performance differs in subtle ways.
Ansel Adams
The only things in my life that compatibly exists with this grand universe are the creative works of the human spirit.
Ansel Adams
There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.
Ansel Adams
There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.
Ansel Adams
There are worlds of experience beyond the world of the aggressive man, beyond history, and beyond science. The moods and qualities of nature and the revelations of great art are equally difficult to define; we can grasp them only in the depths of our perceptive spirit.
Ansel Adams
There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.
Ansel Adams
These people live again in print as intensely as when their images were captured on old dry plates of sixty years ago... I am walking in their alleys, standing in their rooms and sheds and workshops, looking in and out of their windows. Any they in turn seem to be aware of me.
Ansel Adams
To photograph truthfully and effectively is to see beneath the surfaces and record the qualities of nature and humanity which live or are latent in all things.
Ansel Adams
Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop.
Ansel Adams
We must remember that a photograph can hold just as much as we put into it, and no one has ever approached the full possibilities of the medium.
Ansel Adams
When I'm ready to make a photograph, I think I quite obviously see in my minds eye something that is not literally there in the true meaning of the word. I'm interested in something which is built up from within, rather than just extracted from without.
Ansel Adams
When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.
Ansel Adams
Yosemite Valley, to me, is always a sunrise, a glitter of green and golden wonder in a vast edifice of stone and space.

still nowhere NEAR as famous, or collectable, as the famous european painters of the past half millenium. quite obvious these two are trying to stir up as much hype as possible to attract bids

You are entitled to your opinion Penz. Nobody else is trying to compare him to any other famous person except that you are. But Penz your opinion calling him semi-famous is just silly and humorous at the same time.

Absolutely amazing. Ansel Adams is an inspiration, an incredible artist and an amazing person. While I wouldn't, ever, pay 8,7,6, or frankly even 5 figures on a work of art, were I to spend a significant chunk of change on a piece it would be one of his.

Also, yes, calling Adams "semi-famous" is re-god-damn-diculous.

Also, given that there are a lot of unknown works in that collection - photos never before seen, I can easily see the whole collect being worth the money they're estimating. The historical value alone is priceless.

Picasso. Da Vinci. Van Gogh. Renoir. Monet. Everyone in the developed world has heard of them. Only people who are fans of photography have heard of Ansel Adams.

Well you're just wrong on that. He might not be as famous as Michelangelo or Da Vinci simply because he hasn't been a part of popular culture for as long. But he's certainly well known far outside of photography circles.

You can argue the toss all you want but he doesnt even begin to approach the recognition of the aforementioned artists. And fwiw...some of the artists i mentioned did their work around the same time Adams was doing his work.

And I can say the same thing to you - I mean first of all, you've changed your position. Initially you said he wasn't known outside of photography circles, now you're saying he doesn't even begin to approach the recognition of the other artists you've mentioned. A small point, but a point nonetheless. Secondly, you're not providing any evidence, or anything besides your opinion - which is what it is. But I don't agree and that's all there is to it - you can disagree with me as much as you like, but you aren't changing my opinion that you're just wrong. Finally, and, since, just like you I have my own baseless and unverifiable opinions, I will just as easily say that Ansel Adams is just as well known as someone like Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh or Picasso. As in, most people will recognize his name, know he's an artist of some sort and be entirely unable to point to a single work he's created. I'll freely admit he doesn't have the name recognition of Michelangelo or De Vinci, but, he also has never had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle named after him, and his works haven't become the punch line of jokes the way the Mona Lisa has.
