You Fail Me Again, Subaru.
2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI - Automatic
now I'm not sure if this is just for Australia, or everywhere, but the mere thought of it is tantamount to blasphemy.
And here I am starting to like the thing and they went and did something else stupid.
oh, and Mr. Senior = LULZ
Subaru Australia has announced that the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Model Year 2011 Impreza WRX STI will be available for the first time with the choice of an automatic transmission.
Following on from the news that sedan variants are to be reintroduced to the range, Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, said: “We can now confirm that the revised sedan and hatchback Impreza WRX STIs will add the option of a five-speed automatic transmission. “We’ve had increasing enquires about an auto over the last two years and we’re delighted to be able to deliver what a significant number of customers have requested.”
Mr Senior said the transmission would reflect the performance and engineering values of STI to produce a “fantastic driver’s car that will expand its appeal to a wider audience.”
Impreza WRX STIs will also continue to be available with a six-speed manual transmission.
Unveiled at the New York International Auto Show this year, revised Impreza WRX STI sedan and hatch are due on sale during the last quarter of 2010. Subaru STI specialist retailers are now taking orders.
Pricing and full specifications will be announced at launch time.

Re: You Fail Me Again, Subaru.
Interesting. An article I read in today's local paper (Melbourne, so not exactly a 'local' paper) is posted on AF on the same day.
I really can't see anyone buying one though. Not a 5 speed. 5 speed autos are like 5 years ago.
Maybe some moderately wealthy douche-bags that just want to seem cool.

Strange that it wouldn't be a paddle-shifter setup like the Lancer.
The STi looks ok in that picture, but in real life the sedan is just a five year old Korean sedan ripoff.

i think the STi looks better as a sedan (although I think it'd look better still as a coupe...), but when it came out, i was thinking more like illegitimate bastard child of a Corolla and a Suzuki Aerio, both of which are Japanese. nationality wise anyway. Suzukis may just be five-year-old Korean cars quality wise.

Re: You Fail Me Again, Subaru.
I would take a Swift over a non WRX Impreza anyday. Which says something because it goes against my whole RWD > AWD > FWD philosophy.
And thinking about it, the standard WRXs always came with an auto option. Wouldn't be my choice, but the reviews tended to say it complemented the turbo motor.

Well, the regular WRX I can understand. It's a little bit more "pedestrian" (if that word could be applied to it at all) than an STi.
But like you said, if it was like the paddle-shift twin clutch in the Evo, I'd probably be more receptive to it, but a reagular old autobox in an STi? That's in the "You've got to be kidding me" realm of ridiculous.
They're in bed with Toyota, you'd think they could at least collaborate to put together a twin clutch gearbox with flappy paddles for that car.
