Despite my anti-EA thing, I was really intrigued by this. Then I found out you're not driving straight through. It's in stages that jumps from one city to another. It's like, you're in San Francisco, you get to the end of the San Fran stage, there's cutscenes, and then you're trying to get through Denver, or some shit.

So, meh.

well, I've always been a fan of the NFS games, but a few of the recent ones--Undercover, namely--have sucked worse than anyone could have imagined.
They've really kinda turned me off of arcade-type racing games.

In this day and age of Blu-ray and satellite mapping, it can't be too long until a game comes out where you will be able to drive across the USA.

I'd love to relive my trip. For the magnificent scenery, amazing roads and unintentionally hilarious signage...we might need to get Olds involved to clarify what exactly constitutes a forest.

You can't see the trees for the forest. :jay:

As for the inevitable game from satellite mapping and bluray, i'd say the bluray part is actually not a factor at all. I'd say mobile platforms and the ability for any old person with an idea and the know-how to bring out an app is the more important thing we've got going for that to be possible.

We're more likely going to get a game that can create the 'track' on the fly using the satellite (planes, which is where all the images come from where you can actually make out anything) data and with very basic graphics than we are a fully modeled game world on a HD console or PC.

A higher resolution sweep over the world (that ideally includes some detailed elevation data), a team of cluey programming students and some improvements in procedural generation and I can see a game like that happening on phones in a couple of generations (of phones that is, not people).

I read somewhere that the total mileage is 200 miles.

That sucks. I don't know how they can't pull off at least 1000.

Yeah, really. That isn't even 10% of the actual distance from LA to NY. Come on, EA.

I wouldn't give a shit if there was 3 discs, I would play a game that needed me to race 3000 miles.

Post by Swerve Sat Aug 06, 2011 12:01 pm

I really want to actually do LA to NY next trip to the US. I essentially clocked 4,500 miles in 6 days last month. So a month would be plenty of time to zigzag across the country. Of course, either buying a car or completing the round trip would be necessary to avoid the massive "different location drop off fee". But I guess going back would allow even more country to be covered.

If they could make it with no loading times except when you had to change discs it would be even better. No stages or anything, handle as much as you can at a time. And there could be hotels or rest stops you could pull over into to take a break/save your game etc.

Also, you would have to worry about watching your fuel, other traffic, and police. There might be some logistical problems incoporating all of these elements but nothing that couldnt be worked out.

+2. That kind of game, with a lot of the stuff Honor described would be fantastic.

I'd like to have been in on some of The Run's product planning meetings.

"We're going to have supercars capable of 200 miles per hour in this thing! How many miles of road should we put in?"
"Um, about 200? That should make for a lengthy game, huh?"

EA doesnt care about actually making a good or innovative game, just enough to get a decent amount of sales without putting alot of actual effort into it. See the Madden games.

EA used to have great games and NFS was there from the start. NFS hasn't been the same since Hot Pursuit 2 IMO. I haven't really played one I liked since then.

I also hated when EA bought out Maxis. All they focused on was The Sims and that was pretty much it. I've wanted a newer version of SimFarm since the 90's, but they'll have The Sims "Better Homes and Garden" Edition out next week.

Also, my favorite NFS game to this day is High Stakes.

I was a big fan of the desert strike games. Not sure why they haven't updated the series. They could make a pretty sweet one on the current gen platforms. Also, id like to see a renewal of the road rash series. Those both used to be big moneymakers for EA and they've abandoned them.

Yeah and the north part of Texas through Amarillo isn't that bad either, as I remember, especially if you're not on I-40. there's so much more to see off the beaten path. So you gotta carry a map to do it; big whoop.

And man, I didn't even know you could go straight into Missouri from Oklahoma. lol I should have paid attention in school.
And man, the Interstates seem more plentiful (and smooshed together) east of the Mississippi.
