So I go buy a new TV today at Best Buy

Post by Bluntman on Wed Nov 04, 2009 2:57 pm

And figure out the total price with sales tax before I leave the house. So I get said TV and whe the guy rings it up it is $15.00 more than I figured it to be. I said why is it $15.00 more than my calculation. Well apparently California charges a $15.00 recycling fee now. WTF! I am not bringing in a TV to recycle!!!!! That is bullshit! And the guy said it is not just Best Buy, it is every retailer in Cal. :grrr: :grrr: :grrr:

Fuck California... I could never live there. Beautiful state but too much of "the man" in that state for me.

So what you'd rather just throw your t.v (one day) in the local dump? I suggest that you just quietly pay the $15.00. It is small cost to pay to help keep what is a now a growing plethora of used electronics from being thrown in land fills.

Why? Bitching to the sales clerk about it won't change the law required to anyone who buys a t.v. (in this case).

The tons of old electronics sitting and rotting away including the numerous toxic elements they contain in our land fills is amazing. One can debate how recycling programmes may be instituted, operated and even paid for but to have consumers think more about what they do with their old junk is not a bad thing. These programmes also need to be funded in some way. Do you have a better idea? If you think you do then petition government with it ok?

i aleays ask them in what way my little extra price will attribute to the disposal of the apparel, a question they ususally can't answer, countered by a "i'm not paying for something i don't know what it is", usually resulting in not paying the bonus.

I usually donate or sell old TVs I don't want anymore...

That sucks that the $15 is state-wide.

It's not their job to know how an old t.v etc. may be disposed. But cities and states have recycle programmes. Pick up a phone book, look online and call those who run these programmes if you have a question as to what and how they dispose of this junk.

Those which usually are charities which pick up your old t.v. if they can't then sell them get a reimbursement to then drop them off at local recyclers, this may vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction though.

$15 is pretty trivial. If they built it into the cost of the TV (which is probably the way it should be, I suppose) you wouldn't know the difference either way.

screw that shit, I'd pay the 15 bucks if i was actually recycling a TV and knew it just wasn't be shipped china to be ripped of solder.

So that 15 bucks, would pay for More fuel to float it back to china, pay the labor wage so some 8 year old can melt the components off and breath in the fumes, so 2 components can be reused, and the rest just gets thrown into the ocean or a big pile out back.

I'd order a TV online or buy one out of state to avoid.

No bitching at the salesperson existed . I simply asked as to why $15.00 more, and got the answer. Oh and I looked at the receipt, and it is $16.00. I guess I never noticed before. Apparently it started in 2006.

I hate to say it but I agree with les.

The average person in public can in no way be trusted to responsibly recycle their own TV. I'm pretty sure this in an inarguable fact with all the shitty things people do on a daily basis. You're also complaining about a 2% cost, much less than I'm guessing you paid for insurance.

Only catch is that it needs to actually go to pay a real, responsible recycling operation.

PS xtine - many charities sell wholesale to dealers who ship large amounts to China and a few other far east countries. Donating it doesn't ensure proper disposal practices.

You can recycle computers for free here - presumably because we're closer to China.

If you can't think of a use, or someone who could use it - for a spare tv then you've got it too good.

i try to make it a principle not to pay for something i don't know what it is or what will be done with it. i also find it a huge ripoff scheme if people ask me for money when they don't know what's going to be done with it.

if you disagree, i'll give you my paypal, and give alot of money for charity. i won't tell you which charity, or how much of your money will actually go to charity, though.

Jager is definitely like the assholes shot of choice. I used to drink many moons ago but I realized it was the cause of a good number of black outs. Now its whiskey and a punch in the face.

:roflmao: The best part is that I can't tell if this is sarcasm.

Not at all, man. I truly do love Jaegermeister.

I do, too, actually. I think a lot of people do. To the point where it seems kind of cliche, hence me wondering.

Meh. It's an easy, good-tasting shot that will get you fucked up. Plus, it's full of vitamins and herby goodness and shit.

Like at the checkout at the market they ask would you like to donate a dollar to breast cancer. I would rather go to a titty bar and donate my singles, at least I get to see the breasts I am donating to.
