Digital Cameras

Post by Omni on Tue Jun 02, 2009 12:47 am

Well it looks like maybe the time has come. I got my camera in '03... it's a 3.1 megapixel with 3x optical and a very shitty video mode. I'm about to go on a trip across the country in less than a month and I'm thinking it's time to get a little more serious about photography and get something nice. I don't think I want to go crazy here but do you guys think it's worth getting a DSLR if I could find a good one for less than 600 rather than buying another point and shoot for around 350? What would you guys get/what do you have good experience with?

I've had nothing but good experiences with my Canon Rebel SXi. That body comes with some good lense packages that should fit into your price range.

An SLR is a pain in the ass if it's going to be your only camera and you want to carry it around with you.

So far I've found two cameras I like that are around 450. One is an SLR: Olympus Evolt E520 10MP Digital SLR Camera and the other is not: Fujifilm Finepix S100fs 11.1MP Digital Camera

What do you guys think?

Do you want to have to carry around an extra lens or 2 with the camera? Do you want something that can fit in a pocket? If no to the first question then obviously the Fuji is the better option, unless the answer to the second question is yes.

You're the only one that knows your needs and wants. :dunnas:

Dude, go with the Olympus. That's the exact camera I have. I used to have the Evolt 500 but I dropped it onto asphault like a month ago and disaligned the mirrors. Sent it in and they said it'd be $200 to fix so I bought the 520 body for $350 instead (Amazon was the cheapest). Customer service was very nice and when I told them I didn't want to fix it they sent it back to me for free. When I bought the 500 it came with two lenses, 45mm, 150mm, an now have a since bought 300mm Zukio lense for it ($330 from Amazon). I loved my E500 and the 520 is just a little better (higher megapixles, more options, live view LCD screen, etc). The interface is also MUCH more user friendly than the Canon one (my mom has an XTi or whatever). I am not sure about the Fuji, though.

Here is a pic I took with my camera in RAW mode. Obviouslly a lot of post processing was done but you get the idea.

HDR pic:

Using the 300mm lense, just a plain jpeg:

Just chceked out your link (the price I mentioned above was just for the body only) and just understand that lense is good (took the first two of my pics above with it) but it won't do much for you as far as zooming. I would highly recommend getting the 150mm lense with it too. I like to go to races and stuff and the 45mm lense wouldn't cut it for that, IMO. Not sure of your intentions, though.

For example:

Thanks Talon. Those are some sweet pics. I probably will end up going with the olympus. I didn't want to spend too much but I could get it with both lenses for only 100 bucks more than with just the 42mm. I might have to go for it.

Definitly a good start and probably enough to keep you happy for a while. If you're going DSLR, it's hard to beat that combo.

Omni,

Here is something I did a while ago to show the differences between a regular jpeg, RAW, and HDR. The RAW and HDR require a bit of post processing but there's a lot of potential for both. I am still learning their ins-and-outs myself.

i wouldnt get an slr as my only camera as it will start to piss you off carrying it everywhere. i only use mine when im bored and feel like going out solely to take pictures, or when i go to things like the F1 and take my pocket camera with me too.

Yeah, that's why I got a good case that's basically a backpack for cameras. My current point and shoot is already pretty bulky so I don't think I'm really going to mind all that much. I'd really rather not have to buy two new cameras.

Frankly I prefer only having an SLR. It's all I carried for most of my life. Had a point and shoot in law school and took fewer pictures than ever before. Now I have an SLR and I'm getting back into photography.

So I snapped a few pics outside tonight and I can tell this camera has some serious potential.

It may have sized it down or some shit but it looks pretty sweet on my computer for just using a preset mode in the dark.
