Football 2008

Post by 911 on Mon Aug 04, 2008 12:49 pm

I didn't want the whole football thread to be in the favre thread so I started a new one.

What are your runners this year? Who do you think will be the unlikely playoff team?

I like Houston's chances of getting a wild-card spot. They had a strong season last year and I think are finally on their way to really challenging Jacksonville and making trouble for Indy. Minnesota has a pretty good shot at making things happen this year also.

Other than that, I don't really see much change from how things shook out last year.

Do they ever shuffle the divisions? It seems like some teams have a perpetually rough run (like Houston).

And the NFC North almost guarantees GB a playoff spot every year.

It's avoided if possible to keep from messing up a lot of the great rivalries, like Chicago-Green Bay, etc. The last time they shuffled divisions around was when the Texans were added. They had 32 teams at that point, and rather than have some divisions with uneven numbers of teams thanks to all the expansion, they could have 8 divisions each with 4 teams. They tried to keep things as close as possible but strange things happened. For instance, when the AFC South was created, the NFL put expansion teams Houston and Jacksonville there, and put in recently-relocated Tennessee. When they looked to see who the fourth team would be, they pulled one out of the AFC East. And instead of putting Miami in the AFC South to be geographically situated with all the other teams there, for some unknown reason they pulled Indianapolis away from the other northeastern teams in the AFC East and put them there.

I don't think travel's as big of a deal when you only play 1 game a week.

I just think Houston got hosed with JAX and Indy in the division.

True, but if you're going to call it the AFC South and have one of the teams arbitrarily in the north when there's a southern team in the AFC East that could have moved over, that just seems silly in my OCD-riddled brain.

My Brownies sucked it up in the pre-season, ffffuck. I am clinging on to the "It's just preseason" like a turd on Aris' asshair.

The Pats and Colts both went 0-4 too. :-/

The Colts did win against the Falcons in preseason to go 1-4. But the Colts ALWAYS suck in the preseason. I think that single win is the 2nd preseason win they've had in 4 years. Usually the starters are still nursing injuries from the previous season and don't get risked at all in the preseason.

Here, after the Dallas-Cleveland game, Fox switched over to the end of the Carolina-San Diego game. My god, what an absolute abortion of a two-minute drill Carolina ran. Just based off of that series, they 100% absolutely did not deserve to win. If anyone in the San Diego locker room after the game had any decency, they would have filled the air with the sound of self-inflicted gunshots. That was appalling.

I thought when they cut Thomas Jones loose after Super Bowl 41, it was a complete bonehead move from which it would take a long time to recover. But that Forte guy is hella better than that bum Benson. This might have been just the beginning of a pretty good season. If they play like that all year, they're going to own the division and do well in the playoffs...

i always thought dropping TJ was a good move. he was way overvalued in that franchise, and they knew it. trading him made him a bit better, because when you go to a new team, you have to prove yourself, but he's still nothing all that special. having favre to take pressure off him wil help him too.
but fuck TJ.
Getting the money to put into other areas was the right move. and apparently, the draft went really well for us. i think some of our rookies (not to mention Forte) probably did us well.

I'll wait to see how Forte does against a better run D - the Indy D didn't really look too special that game.

And to put away an air of favoritism I'm not endorsing Michael Turner for President either.
